What is an MRI?
MRI, or “magnetic resonance imaging,” is a noninvasive medical imaging technique performed to capture detailed images of tissues and structures in the body. Conducting MRIs helps Cambria Somerset Radiology’s physicians view and treat tumors, internal bleeding, blood vessel issues, cancer cells, aneurysms, and infections.
MRIs are particularly helpful in examining the body’s soft tissue and in helping the physicians diagnose a variety of conditions. They also offers magnetic resonance angiography (MRA) to evaluate blood vessel health and plaque disease and offer MRI arthrogram to examine the health of your joints.
How do MRIs work?
MRI scanning is one of the most effective methods for viewing soft tissue and diagnosing disease.
MRIs use strong magnetic fields and radio energy to capture images of the body by interacting with the protons in each cell. The combination of magnetic force and radio energy creates strong images of the body’s soft tissue.
Patients may be given a contrast solution intravenously to create brighter MRI images.
MRIs may capture information not found in other imaging techniques like X-rays or CT scans, and don’t expose patients to harmful radiation. However, MRIs emit a strong magnetic field, so patients with certain implants should not undergo MRI scanning.
What can I expect when I get an MRI?
Typically when you undergo an MRI scan, you will lie on a table that will slide into the scanning machine. The MRI machine then emits a magnetic field and radio energy onto the part of the body that is being scanned. You will stay completely still in the machine while the images are being captured.
Open MRIs are available as well, and also provides exceptional images for the diagnosing and treatment of disorders.
You won’t feel any pain during an MRI, but those who experience claustrophobia may prefer to take a sedative before entering the scanning machine. Please contact the practice if you have any concerns about undergoing an MRI scan.
How long will an MRI take?
Most MRI scans take 20-30 minutes to complete, and you will be able to continue your daily activities immediately following the scan. The physicians go over the details of your procedure before your scan.
